Maternity leave is time-limited and centered on the birth event. The policy provides a 12-month window after birth to use maternity style leave, specifically for recovery and initial postpartum needs. Once that year passes, any unused leave expires. That makes one year after birth the appropriate expiration point.

Choosing six months is too short for a full postpartum recovery period and administrative needs. Immediate after birth gives no recovery time at all, and two years extends far beyond the typical entitlement, which isn’t allowed by the policy.
